Founded in 1826, Jackson is the oldest and largest city in Butts County and is the seat of government. With a population of around 5000, it is located near the center of the county and within 7 miles of Interstate 75, Georgia’s main interstate corridor from north to south.
Jackson features a beautiful downtown square comprising shops and businesses in beautiful old turn-of-the-century buildings, all surrounding the historic 1898 Courthouse. Other notable buildings within walking distance of the square include the 1898 Carmichael House, a beautiful Queen Anne style mansion that has recently been restored and the Jackson Presbyterian Church, built in 1897.
A variety of restaurants, including a coffee shop, are located either on the downtown square or within a short distance of the square. International cuisines include Chinese, Italian, Japanese and Mexican, in addition to more regional offerings.
In October of 2017, Jackson was named to Southern Living Magazine’s list of the “Prettiest Small Towns in Georgia”, placing fifth out of sixteen towns under 20,000 in population that made the list. This is reflective of a concerted effort made over the past few years to revitalize downtown and beautify the corridors leading to town. The article can be accessed here.
Jackson Veterans Memorial Park, dedicated in 2011, is two blocks east of the square and is a beautiful memorial and tribute to our local heroes, both those killed in action during wars and those who served their country and lived to be veterans. An eternal flame burns each day for those who were lost.
Jackson is designated a Tree City USA and has held this distinction for over 25 years. The entire city is full of old, beautiful trees of many different varieties, all of which showcase best during the spring months.
Kay Pippin currently serves as the Mayor of Jackson. She presides over a five member City Council, each elected from one of five districts within the city.
